Are You Alive?
How Do You Know?
First, I take deep breaths.
Not the kind that we’re taught to do. The kind of breaths we were born to do. You fill up the sides of your stomach first and then your lungs. Then I let it all go slowly out.
I do this a few times.
Second, I find somewhere I can feel the earth. Doesn’t have to be anything specific like grass. I just need to feel the ground.
Lastly, I get out a notebook and pen (my preferred method of storytelling).
I stare down at the page and see the blankness. All the lines are empty. Some people get hit with trepidation. Or are even daunted, deterred from making a single dent in all that nothingness. But in that moment that I’m looking down, full of life, I feel excited.
I don’t know what I’m going to write. Or even how much.
But I want to.
That’s how I know that I’m alive.
How about you?
What helps you know that you’re alive?
